Euthanasia to end suffering
I am a patient suffering from a terminal disease. I have travelled to several countries in the hope of finding a cure for my disease. Despite these efforts, the doctors have informed me that I have at least one year to live. This was very sad considering that I recently got married to the love of my life and was expecting to start my own family soon. The pain from this disease is unbearable to the extent that I wish the end would come sooner. My European-based doctor told me about euthanasia but he was not sure whether this option was available in my country. Please guide me on whether euthanasia is permitted in Tanzania.

We are sorry to hear about your suffering and pray that you find the strength to endure the pain. Regarding whether euthanasia is permitted in Tanzania, the answer is no. Euthanasia also referred to as assisted suicide (although the two are slightly different) is a crime in Tanzania. According to section 216 of the Penal Code [Cap. 16 R.E. 2022], any person who (a) procures another to kill himself; (b) counsels another to kill himself and thereby induces him to do so; or (c) aids another in killing himself, is guilty of an offence and is liable to imprisonment for life. We sympathize with your situation and advise that you seek medical counselling for your benefit and that of your spouse. Please move with caution and consult your lawyer.
