Dr Abel Mwiburi

Dr. Mwiburi is head of tax and special projects at FB Attorneys and brings over a decade of experience to the firm. His practice interests are in commercial and corporate law matters, advisory and transactional works in land law, and tax as well as commercial and corporate matters, including mining and natural resources. He also advises on statutory compliance issues relating to these areas, as well as managing related disputes, including before regulatory and tax tribunals, and the civil and criminal courts.

Dr. Mwiburi co-leads the tax team appearing in multi-billion dollar disputes before the TRA during objection proceedings, the Tax Revenue Appeals Board, the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal in tax related disputes.

His compliance skills extend to resolving multi-million dollar environmental and licencing disputes, between regulators and energy sector clients, as well as competition law merger clearance matters, including opposed mergers, and those deemed to be anti-competitive.

He is experienced in advising corporate clients on the impact of sector-specific legislation, such as the previously enacted Petroleum Act, as well as on public law questions touching on constitutional and related matters.

Having completed a doctorate from the University of Bayreuth in Germany, he holds graduate and postgraduate qualifications in law from the University of Dar es Salaam and in Legal Practice from the Law School of Tanzania. He combines practice with a position as a law lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law.

Apart from his academic and legal skills gained from advising both public and private sector clients, prior to pursuing his doctorate studies, he worked with PwC as a consultant.

Dr. Mwiburi regularly contributes to the Tanganyika Law Society Journal and is part of the editorial team of FB Attorneys’ own publications – the Legal Update and Q&A with FB Attorneys.
